Location Round Island, B.C., is located in
the Stuart Channel facing
Dodd Narrows, a mile off the Cedar boat ramp, at 40o 07' 00" N latitude and 123o 47' 42" W
longtitude. The island is surrounded by interesting underwater rock reefs ranging from 20' to 90' in depth. Cedar,
the southernmost suburb of Nanaimo, is the nearest community due West on Vancouver Island, with
Ladysmith a few miles to the South. To the North, just behind Dodd Narrows, one can see
Gabriola Island,
with Mudge Island to the Northeast and
De Courcy
Island due East. Looking South Southeast is a stunning view up the Stuart Channel. Vancouver is a brief 30 nautical mile
boat ride due East.
The Island
The island is approximately 10 acres in size at high tide, or some 11 acres at low tide. The highest point is 44 yards above
sea level. The East side of the island is a 30' to 40' cliff, with a gradual slope down to the West side. The Northwest
corner of the island has a natural harbor or small
bay, while the Southwest corner has a convenient protected boat landing area. A set of interesting rocks lie just off
the Southwest corner of the island, frequently inhabited by seals, giving them the name Seal Rock. The island features
several locations ideal for building, with plenty of southern exposure. Due to prevailing winds, tides and location the
island could easily generate solar, wind and tidal power for energy self-sufficiency. See our
map here.

History Considerable history surrounds Round Island. At the turn of the century the
Nanaimo area was renowned for its coal mines. Some of those mining tunnels went well below the sea. One air-intake tunnel
or adit came up on the South shore of the island, and remnants can still be seen today. In the 1920's one of Canada's first
cults, led by Edward Wilson, who proclaimed himself
Brother XII,
settled in the Cedar area and on
De Courcy Island. Local legend has it that when Brother XII fled the area in 1933 with gold bullion worth $500,000 in
1930's dollars, Round Island was one of three possible islands on which this immense treasure could have been buried. In
the 1940's Round Island served as the first line of defence for Nanaimo harbour against possible Japanese maritime attacks.
The gun placements can still be seen today strategically placed on the South end of the island to cover the Stuart Channel.
